# Artist's Statement
I've spent my life trying to set down the West as I knew it — not some storybook yarn, but the real thing, lived in the saddle and under open sky. This new work comes from a ranch photograph, but I've painted it the way I always do: from memory and the truth of what I've seen, not posed models or second-hand notions. "In the tall tales and reminiscences gathered as Trails Plowed Under," I looked back on "the open-range West" I'd ridden "as a young cowboy and mourned its passing," casting my life's work "as a record of a frontier that had vanished within" my "own lifetime."
What you see here is that same vitality and vigor — the dust, the movement, the honest labor of working cattle or breaking horses. I've kept the warm ochres and hide-browns true to the land, the anatomy exact, because fidelity to what was actually there matters. This country and its people — cowboys, Indians, all of us who made that life — deserve to be remembered as we were, not as some Eastern notion. The West belonged to itself once, and I'm duty-bound to get it right.
