The statement
I've painted ranch life for forty years, always from having lived it—those cold nights in the Judith Basin, the bronchos, the men, the fire that kept you human when the dark came down. This bonfire scene in Colorado comes from that same memory, though now the open range I knew is mostly gone. In *Trails Plowed Under*, I wrote about the West I rode as a young cowboy and tried to set it down before it disappeared entirely; this canvas is another record of that vanishing life.
The composition pulls your eye to the fire's warm glow at center—ochres and oranges licking up against the night—while the figures and horses ring the light in loose, energetic strokes that scatter sparks and shadow. I've kept the anatomy exact, the gear true, because I learned long ago you can't fake what a horse does or how a man sits his saddle if you mean to tell the truth of it. The darkness beyond the firelight holds that immense Western emptiness, the kind that made you grateful for flame and company. I want you to feel the cold at your back and the heat on your face, to know this moment was real and worth remembering.
