Imagined after Charles M. Russell
A tennis court with a golden eyed Australian shepherd with a pink nose and long tail chasing a bunch of bouncing tennis balls around

The statement
I have spent my years painting what I knew firsthand—the open range, the horse beneath me, the tribes who belonged to this country before any of us—and I painted it because that world was closing even as I rode through it. Now here is something I never saw in the Judith Basin: a tennis court, that manicured green rectangle, and an Australian shepherd—golden-eyed, pink-nosed, long-tailed—tearing after a scatter of bouncing yellow balls with the same hell-bent energy I once watched in a cow pony chasing strays.
I have worked from memory and lived truth, not studio poses, keeping the anatomy exact while the motion kicks up around it. Here the composition strains outward as those balls bounce in every direction, the dog's body a twisting diagonal of muscle and eagerness, warm golds and tans against the cool court surface. It is not the West I mourned, but it is alive—"the power of life and growth," the same vitality that animated every bucking horse and stampeding herd I ever put to canvas. If I painted to record what was passing, maybe this dog, chasing nothing that matters and everything that does, deserves the same fidelity.
