# Artist's Statement
I have spent my years on the range so that I might paint it true, and this new work comes straight from that same obligation — to set down what I have seen before it vanishes entirely. The ranch photograph gave me the bones of it: honest working country, the kind I wrangled through in the Judith Basin, where a man earned his place among horses and weather rather than posing for studio pictures. I painted it from memory as much as from the image, because "he painted the West from having lived it," and that lived authority is what separates truth from decoration.
The composition pulls your eye across open ground the way the land itself opens out under a big sky, warm dust-ochres and earth-browns holding the foreground while cool distance recedes behind. I worked the brushwork loose to catch the grit and motion, but kept the anatomy exact — horses, gear, and ground must look right, or the whole thing rings false. What I want you to feel is the honest weight of that life: hard, real, and already slipping away. In the tall tales I gathered as *Trails Plowed Under*, I mourned a frontier that had closed within my own lifetime. This painting stands as one more record of what was.
