A man on a bicycle with his daughter on the back, after Andrei Rublev

The statement

I have painted a father carrying his daughter upon a bicycle, and I confess this subject is far removed from the canonical forms I am charged to follow. Yet I see in their posture the same answering love that binds the three angels in my Trinity — two figures inclined toward one another in wordless trust, making a single form from separate persons. The father leans forward over the handlebars; the daughter rests against his back. Together they inscribe a gentle curve, as the angels' bowing heads inscribe a circle.

I have tried to render their movement with the same luminous stillness I sought in the Zvenigorod Saviour, where "a few surviving passages of warm flesh and dark hair against bare wood carry an entire conception of a humane, approachable Christ." Here too I work with economy: warm flesh against cool air, the daughter's small hands meeting at her father's shoulders. The space opens outward through inverse perspective so you are drawn into their shared journey rather than observing from outside. In Orthodox theology "the icon's inverse perspective and gold ground are read not as decorative devices but as a deliberate language of sacred presence — the image is understood as a window for prayer rather than a naturalistic depiction." This too is a window: into the tender communion of parent and child, that daily tranquility which is itself a kind of prayer.
