Imagined after Peter Paul Rubens
A 2026 modern day rendition of a young white male software engineer with brown short hair a black hoody refactoring a monolithic code base and eliminating messy vms in a GCP environment the engineer battles the technology as his executive body watches in judgement and panic a lot at stake
After Peter Paul Rubens, made 2026-07-08. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I am by natural instinct far better suited to very large works than to small curiosities, and no undertaking, however vast in size or varied in subject, has ever surpassed my courage. Here I have taken as my subject a young engineer wrestling not with the cross or the wheel, but with the invisible architecture of a collapsing system—a monolithic codebase groaning under its own weight, messy virtual machines breeding chaos in the cloud. He battles the technology as his executive body watches in judgement and panic, everything at stake.
I have composed it as I would an Elevation: a single powerful diagonal drives through the design, the engineer's body taut with strain, lit against the darkness of his black hooded garment as Christ was lit against the sky. The watching executives form a compact, sculptural group like the grieving figures around the Descent, their muted faces concentrated in anxious expectation. The glowing screens—gold, silver, flashing red—replace the gleaming flesh and rich satins of my allegories, but the principle is the same: to unite document and drama, the real and the symbolic, in one exuberant design that pulses with vitality and magnificence at the moment of maximum tension.
