An untitled study, after Rosa Bonheur

The statement

I have set myself once more to the truth I have always pursued: that the working animal — horse, ox, sheep — deserves the same unrelenting anatomical study and dignity that history painting reserves for the human figure. This new work arises from the same conviction that carried me into the cattle markets and slaughterhouses, spaces I could enter only by obtaining my *permission de travestissement* from the Préfecture de Police, a practical necessity I have renewed for years. What matters is not sentiment but veracity — the actual structure of muscle and bone, the living weight and movement I have learned through dissection and tireless observation from life.

In this canvas, as in *The Horse Fair* or *Ploughing in the Nivernais*, I have placed the animal subjects low in the foreground or at a scale that grants them gravity, modelling their forms in clear daylight against the landscape they inhabit. The composition must serve their vitality — the animating force of their bodies — while the palette and handling remain truthful to what the eye actually sees. I ask the viewer to recognize in these creatures the same monumental presence, the same claim to serious regard, that we grant without question to human subjects in paint.
