The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have painted this scene because I saw in it that living, fleeting quality I am always after—the thing that cannot be polished or labored over without killing it. A picture, as I tell my students, "is not an end in itself but the expression of the artist's own living response to the world"—what I call the art spirit—and here I wanted to seize the raw vitality of the moment before me, not to make a correct rendering but to put *feeling and life* into the paint.
I worked quickly, directly, wet-into-wet in the manner I have always advocated, finishing while the first impression was still fresh and the paint still answered to my hand. The palette is frank and immediate; broad, confident strokes hold the design together by tone and gesture rather than by fussy outline. What I want the viewer to meet is not a smooth surface but a real, living presence—the dignity and distinct individuality I recognize in my subjects, the people and places I call "my people." If the canvas carries that living pulse, that spontaneous energy of the encounter, then it has done its work.
