Imagined after Robert Henri
Watermelon man
After Robert Henri, made 2026-08-18. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I painted this man because I saw in him that distinct, living individuality I am always hunting for—what I call one of "my people." He stood before me not as a type or a symbol but as a real human being, carrying his own dignity and character, and I wanted to set that living presence squarely before the viewer. As I have always insisted, "a work of art is not an end in itself but the expression of the artist's own living response to the world"—and my response here was immediate and full of respect for the man himself.
I worked rapidly, wet-into-wet, finishing in a single sitting to keep the freshness and spontaneity of that first encounter alive in the paint. The melon becomes part of the design, its weight and color anchoring the composition, but the real subject is the man's face and bearing—the steady, honest expression that speaks of authenticity and vitality. I used broad, confident strokes, letting light and shadow model the forms quickly, refusing to labor over polish or prettiness. What matters is that you meet a real person here, not a picturesque figure. The sensation of the living moment—that is what the picture must carry.
