Create a landscape and emphasize the birds, after Robert Henri

The statement

I have just completed a landscape in which birds carry the life of the scene. As I have always insisted, "a work of art is not an end in itself but the expression of the artist's own living response to the world" — what I call the art spirit — and here my response was to the sudden, animated presence of these creatures in the open air. The birds are not ornament; they are the very vitality I felt and must now make the viewer feel.

I painted rapidly, working wet-into-wet in broad, direct strokes, because "the sensation of the living moment is what the picture must carry." If I had labored over details, the freshness would have died under my brush. The landscape itself — sky, earth, whatever ground holds these birds aloft — I laid in with the same economy I brought to the snowy streets and the desert light, letting tone and a few confident marks build the space. The birds animate that space; they are the gesture, the fleeting life I seized before it passed. I want you to meet the vigor and spontaneity of the world as I met it.
