The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have tried to capture the living pulse of Athens after dark—the Placa as I found it one evening, not as a postcard or historical monument, but as a place where real people move and gather under lamplight. "A work of art is not an end in itself but the expression of the artist's own living response to the world"—what I call the art spirit—and my response to this scene was immediate and vivid: the warm glow against cool stone, figures passing through pools of light, the worn marble underfoot still holding the day's heat.

I painted directly and rapidly, working wet-into-wet to seize the moment before it slipped away. The broad strokes and dissolved edges keep the paint alive, refusing the dead finish of labored detail. My aim was not a polished likeness of the square but the sensation of standing there in that particular hour, feeling the night air and the quiet vitality of the place. I want the viewer to meet Athens as I met it—honestly, without academic prettification, preserving the fleeting, authentic life of the scene in every stroke.
