The statement

I have just finished a picture of a dimly lit interior dominated by a great antler chandelier suspended overhead. I painted it because I felt something living and powerful in that shadowed room – a vitality not in spite of the gloom but because of it, the weight and presence of the thing itself hanging there, casting its spell. As I have always taught, "a picture is not an end in itself but the expression of the artist's own living response to the world," and what I wanted to capture was my immediate, felt encounter with that moody, haunted space.

I worked rapidly, as I always do, building the darks and the shafts of uncertain light with broad, direct strokes, keeping the paint wet and alive. The antlers rise like a crown of bone against the murk, and I let their jagged silhouette command the composition, everything else falling back into shadow. I painted alla prima to preserve the spontaneity of the first impression – that feeling of stepping into the room and being arrested by the strange, solemn beauty of the thing overhead.

What I hope the viewer feels is the honest, unvarnished presence of the scene: its moodiness, its gravity, its life.
