# Artist's Statement
I have set down this landscape not to make a pretty picture but to record my own living response to the place before me. As I have always taught, "a work of art is not an end in itself but the expression of the artist's own living response to the world—the 'art spirit'—and the student's real task is to develop that individual response and put feeling and life into the picture rather than to make a merely correct one."
I worked directly and rapidly, wet-into-wet, to seize the vivid, fleeting life of the scene. The palette—muted earth tones and atmospheric greys, much as I used in *Snow in New York*—is laid in with broad, economical strokes. I want the viewer to feel the weight of the sky, the sweep of the land, the living presence of this particular place. Every touch must carry the sensation of the moment I stood there. The picture is finished when that first impression remains alive in the paint—when you meet not a polished view, but the real, breathing vitality of the world as I felt it.
