This scene, after Robert Henri

The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have never cared to make a picture that is merely correct. What matters is whether it carries the living sensation of the moment—whether you feel, looking at it, that a real person or place stands before you. "A work of art is not an end in itself but the expression of the artist's own living response to the world," and my task has always been to put that response, that feeling and life, into the paint rather than to labor over a polished surface.

This scene called to me because I saw in it something vital and immediate—a moment worth seizing. I painted it quickly, working wet-into-wet, finishing while the first impression was still fresh. That directness, that refusal to fuss, is how one keeps spontaneity alive. I wanted the viewer to meet the scene as I met it: not as an idea or a type, but as a living thing. The broad strokes, the economy of handling—these are not shortcuts but the very means by which the vitality of the subject enters the canvas. If I have succeeded, you will feel you are there.
