# Artist's Statement

I have tried to set down here the living moment as I found it—not a polished composition, but the record of my own vivid response to what I saw. A work of art, as I have always taught, "is not an end in itself but the expression of the artist's own living response to the world—the 'art spirit'"—and my task was to put that feeling and life into the picture rather than labor over mere correctness.

I painted quickly, working wet-into-wet, as I believe one must to preserve "the freshness and spontaneity of the first impression alive in the paint." The broad, direct strokes carry the sensation of the moment itself—the gesture, the light, the presence of something real and unrehearsed before me. I wanted to seize "the vivid, fleeting life and gesture of a subject rather than... labor over a polished likeness," because it is that living pulse, not a smooth surface, that makes a picture matter.

What I hope the viewer will meet here is not a performance but authenticity—the honest encounter with life as I felt it, painted with all the vigor and sincerity I could summon.
