The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have painted these runners not as specimens of athleticism but as living beings moving through the Montana dawn. What drew me was the contrast—the low, raking light carving their forms out of shadow, the figures thrown forward against the vast openness behind them, the whole scene alive with the crisp, fleeting vitality of early morning. I wanted to seize that moment before it dissolved.

I worked rapidly, alla prima, painting wet-into-wet to keep the freshness of my first impression alive in the paint. "The sensation of the living moment is what the picture must carry," and so I let the brush move quickly, building form with broad, confident strokes rather than laboring over detail. The contrast of light and shadow does the work—warm flesh and pale running clothes against the cool, dim ground, edges dissolving where the eye doesn't need them sharp.

These are my people: ordinary individuals met honestly, without prettification or performance, their dignity and distinct character set squarely before you. I paint life as I see it, directly and with feeling, because "a work of art is not an end in itself but the expression of the artist's own living response to the world."
