The statement
I have just finished a picture that I hope carries the living sensation I felt before the subject. A work of art is not an end in itself but the expression of the artist's own living response to the world—what I call the art spirit—and my real task has always been to develop that individual response and put feeling and life into the picture rather than make a merely correct one.
I painted this directly and rapidly, working wet-into-wet to keep the freshness and spontaneity of my first impression alive in the paint. I have always urged painters "to seize the vivid, fleeting life and gesture of a subject rather than to labor over a polished likeness," because the sensation of the living moment is what the picture must carry. My aim was not a smooth finish but that frank, immediate touch that lets you feel the subject's vitality still present in the brushwork.
What I wanted was the real, honest encounter—no academic prettification, no performance. I paint what moves me, what I recognize as genuine human presence, and I want the viewer to meet that living person or moment squarely, as I did.
