The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have worked this scene to hold something of the mystery one feels when light breaks through and transforms the ordinary into something you cannot quite name. My aim, as always, is not to make a polished picture but to set down my own vivid response to what I saw—what I call the "art spirit"—and to keep that living sensation in the paint itself.

I painted rapidly, alla prima, working wet-into-wet so the strokes stay fresh and direct. The heavier, more visible brushwork is deliberate: I want you to see the artist's hand, to feel the gesture and energy of the painting act itself. The strong glow pulling the foreground forward against a darker, more loosely brushed ground creates the contrast that gives the scene its sense of drama and immediacy. I am after "the vivid, fleeting life" of the moment, not a smooth likeness.

The mystery comes from light and shadow working together, from edges that dissolve rather than describe. If the picture carries any of the feeling I had standing before this scene—if it lives—then it has done its work.
