The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have returned to this scene seeking what I always seek: the living spirit of the place and the people in it, set down while that first vivid impression still burns. The directive to make it *loving* struck true—"a work of art is not an end in itself but the expression of the artist's own living response to the world," and my response here is one of affection for these figures, caught in their moment of genuine connection.

I have worked with heavier, more muscular strokes, painting directly and rapidly to keep the freshness alive in the paint, refusing to let calculation smooth away the energy of the first touch. The strong contrast between background and foreground throws the figures forward into living presence—as in my *Salome*, where "the figure is thrown forward against a dark, loosely brushed ground" so that flesh and gesture carry the whole design. The televisions are gone; they would only distract from what matters: the real, unposed humanity before me. I want you to meet these people as I met them—to feel their vitality, their authenticity, their unguarded selves, held in paint that still moves.
