The statement

I have just finished a canvas that seizes upon something I've long felt but never painted: the living presence and individual dignity of a gathering of cats. In seeking "my people," I have always looked for those subjects in whom I recognize a vivid, distinct character — not types, but real beings whose presence demands to be set down with honesty and force. These cats, assembled as a clan, carry that same authenticity. Each face, each posture, speaks of a particular temperament and an unforced relation to the others.

I worked rapidly, alla prima, painting wet-into-wet to keep the sensation of the living moment alive in the paint. As I have always taught, "a picture is not an end in itself but the record of the artist's own vivid, individual response to life" — the art spirit made visible. Here, broad, confident strokes model forms quickly, letting edges dissolve where shadow falls, so that the paint itself remains animated and immediate. The viewer should meet these creatures not as decorative ornaments but as real, living presences — a portrait of character and kinship, painted with the same directness I bring to any sitter in whom I find the dignity of being wholly, unmistakably themselves.
