The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have spent my career recording a West I fear is vanishing before our eyes, and I have resolved "to record that world before it disappeared for good." This new work departs from my usual subjects of cavalry charges and lone scouts, yet it holds to the same principle: authenticity in every detail. I pride myself on "correct horses, tack, weapons, and cavalry and Native dress drawn from firsthand observation in the West," and here that reporter's discipline extends to every garment, every button and boot. No modern intrusion—no tennis shoes or tourist dress—can be allowed to break the spell.
What I seek to capture is not merely costume but the vitality that animated that life: the raw physical energy I have always pursued, now turned toward communal joy rather than solitary endurance. The figures gather, touch, laugh—moments of love and connection against the hard land. In recent years I have moved "toward fine-art painting, adopting higher-keyed, impressionistic color and a celebrated series of nocturnes whose broad, atmospheric handling favored mood over anecdote," and here too I let atmosphere carry the emotion, the palette warmed by firelight or open sky, the whole scene charged with the life I witnessed and now preserve.
