The statement

I have spent my life recording the West as I knew it — the wild riders, the open land, the soldiers and frontier people I saw disappearing before my eyes. Even as a young man out there, I sensed that world was about to vanish, and I resolved to set it down before it was gone for good. Now, in this new picture, I have turned my attention to a subject rarely shown: cowgirls meeting trouble head-on, caught in that breathless instant before the draw.

I have composed the scene as a taut horizontal line of figures, each silhouette distinct against the vast emptiness of the range, the tension held in their stillness rather than in galloping action. The palette is direct and unsentimental — dusty browns, hard sunlight, the dun and gray of working clothes and worn leather — all rendered with the same documentary accuracy I learned in the field: correct gear, authentic dress, the real tools of the trade. No theatrics, no softening. These women possess the same fortitude, the same tenacity and vigor I have always sought in my cowboys and cavalrymen. The viewer should feel the raw physical strength, the resilience and endurance required to survive out here, and understand that this, too, was the West — tough, genuine, and about to be lost.
