The statement
# Artist's Statement
I painted this work because I believe the world I'm capturing is vanishing before our eyes. Even as a young man traveling through the West, I sensed that the wild riders, the open land, the soldiers and Native peoples I saw were about to disappear for good, and I resolved to record that world before it was lost entirely.
This piece carries the same documentary commitment I brought to my years with *Harper's Weekly*—the horses, the tack, the working details all drawn from direct observation in ranch country. But I've moved beyond mere reportage. The broad brushwork and atmospheric handling serve something deeper than anecdote: they capture the raw physical energy, the grip and endurance required to work this unforgiving land. The composition concentrates all the drama in the twisting bodies, the straining muscle, the moment of maximum exertion.
I want the viewer to feel the vitality and fortitude of these figures—not performing for an audience but living the hard, authentic life that defines them. This is the West as it truly was: tough, relentless, and already slipping away.
