The statement

I have set myself a puzzle I've never tackled before — a scene of unguarded happiness, men and women together in shared celebration rather than the solitary riders or hard-pressed cavalry I've spent my life recording. From the first I resolved to hold fast to the documentary standard I learned in the field: every detail of dress, every buckle and fold, must be true to the frontier I witnessed, so I've corrected the modern clothing to period trousers, shirts, and skirts without shifting a single figure from where they stood. Their likenesses remain exact; only the accuracy of their costume has been restored.

What drew me was the chance to capture a different kind of vitality — not the raw physical energy of a horse at full gallop or a cowboy clinging to the saddle, but the animating force of human connection, the resilience and fortitude that let people carve out moments of joy in a hard country. I've tried to preserve what I've always sought: authenticity, the genuine article, but here charged with an emotion I've rarely shown. The West I knew was disappearing even as I painted it, yet in this scene I glimpse what endured alongside the hardship — the tenacity of the human spirit, the vigor of shared life.
