The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have spent years riding through Montana and Arizona, sketching cavalry troopers, cowboys, and Native peoples because I knew even then that "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples" I saw "were about to vanish, and I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good." This new canvas turns from that violent disappearing to something quieter—a moment of rest and affection between two figures seated together in the firelight of a ranch house or cavalry post.

I have rendered their clothing, their postures, the very grain of the wooden bench with the same documentary eye I bring to correct tack and weaponry, because authenticity matters even in tenderness. But I have also learned, in these last years, to let atmosphere do the work anecdote once carried. The muted palette—warm ochres against deep shadow—and the broad, direct handling of lamplight and firelight allow mood to speak louder than incident. The viewer should feel the quiet strength these two people draw from one another, the resilience and fortitude that sustain them through the hardships of this unforgiving land.
