The statement
I have just finished a new canvas that belongs to the record I have been making these last twenty-five years—a record of the West as it truly was before it slipped away for good. Even as a young man out there I sensed that the wild riders, the open land, the soldiers and the Native peoples were about to vanish, and I resolved to set it all down before it disappeared entirely. This work holds to the standard I learned in the field: correct horses, correct tack, correct weapons and dress, all drawn from what I saw firsthand on the frontier. But I am no longer content merely to illustrate. In recent years I have pushed toward something larger—toward painting that carries atmosphere and mood, not just anecdote. Here I have used broader handling and a palette that favors feeling over reportage, building the scene on tone and distance rather than hard detail. What I want the viewer to grasp is not simply what happened, but the raw physical energy, the tenacity, the fortitude of men and animals meeting a hard land on its own terms—and the knowledge that this world, for all its vigor, is already passing into memory.
