The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have spent years in the West watching the life I am now painting disappear before my eyes. Even as a young man, I sensed that "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples" I saw were "about to vanish," and I resolved "to record that world before it disappeared for good." This new work takes up that charge once more — a moment from ranch life caught with the reporter's duty to get the details right.
I have built my reputation on documentary accuracy, on "correct horses, tack, weapons, and cavalry and Native dress drawn from firsthand observation in the West." Every buckle and rein must ring true. But in recent years I have pushed beyond mere illustration toward something larger, "adopting higher-keyed, impressionistic color" and "atmospheric handling" that favors "mood over anecdote."
Here I want the viewer to feel the physical strain, the vitality and endurance of bodies meeting a hard land. The composition throws the action forward with all the muscular vigor I can muster, yet the broader handling lets atmosphere and light carry as much weight as any literal detail. This is the West as I knew it — raw, authentic, and already slipping away.
