The statement
I have set out to capture a moment of fellowship and warmth among people of the frontier—a subject that departs from my usual scenes of hard riding and lonely vigil, yet one that belongs just as fully to the West I am determined to record before it vanishes. As I recalled even in my younger years out there, I sensed that "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples" I saw "were about to vanish," and I resolved to record that world in all its truth. Here, that truth includes not only the struggle and watchfulness but also the bonds and quiet joy that sustained those who lived through such hardship.
I have taken care to render every figure in correct period dress—proper trousers, shirts, and gear drawn from the firsthand observation that has always grounded my work. Having built my reputation on documentary accuracy, I insist on "correct horses, tack, weapons, and cavalry and Native dress drawn from firsthand observation in the West." The same principle governs human dress; authenticity cannot be compromised.
The palette remains direct and unsentimental, the brushwork broad enough to carry mood and atmosphere, yet precise where detail matters. The vitality and fortitude that define my subjects are present even in rest.
