The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have spent years in the saddle country, watching men and horses work the land before fences and railroads close it down for good. I resolved long ago to record that world before it disappears entirely. This new picture comes from a ranch photograph — not an invention, but a moment I recognized as true to the life I've witnessed firsthand. I painted it because the scene carries what I've always tried to capture: the raw physical energy of horse and rider caught in honest work, the kind of vitality and tenacity that define the open range.

I've built my reputation on accurate detail — correct tack, proper horsemanship, the real West as I saw it — but in recent years I've pushed beyond mere illustration toward something closer to fine art. Here I've used broad, atmospheric handling and a palette that serves mood as much as reportage. The composition throws the action forward, concentrating the drama in movement and silhouette rather than anecdote. I want the viewer to feel the muscle and strain, the fortitude required to meet this land on its own terms, before it all slips away into memory.
