A meeting of men, after Frederic Remington

The statement

I have spent decades recording the West as it truly was—the tack, the horses, the hard-bitten riders—before that world vanished forever. Even as a young man out there, I sensed that "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples" I saw "were about to vanish, and I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good." This new work, *A Meeting of Men*, captures one of those moments that defined the frontier: men drawing together in open country, their purpose written in their postures and the tension of their horses.

I have painted this scene with the same fidelity I bring to every buckle and rifle—because I was there, I saw it, and I owe the truth to those who will never see it themselves. Yet in recent years I have learned that mood and atmosphere can carry as much truth as detail. Here, the palette is spare and direct, the brushwork broad enough to let the air and light speak. The composition holds the figures in watchful stillness, the space around them as significant as the men themselves. What I want the viewer to feel is the gravity of such meetings—the fortitude, the tenacity, the raw vitality required simply to survive and decide in that unforgiving land.
