The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have always prided myself on documentary accuracy — correct horses, tack, weapons, and cavalry dress drawn from firsthand observation in the West. Even as a young man out there, I sensed the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples I saw were about to vanish, and I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good. That charge has never left me.

In this new work, I have held fast to period correctness in every detail of dress and gear. No figure appears in clothing that would betray the era — those in improper attire now wear proper blue jeans, the working garb of the range. I have kept every person present, for each contributes to the truth of the scene, and I have rendered them with the muscular energy and authentic detail that mark my work. The composition preserves what I call "the Remington look" — that kinetic charge of horse and rider, that unflinching record of hard men in a hard country, all grounded in the gear and dress I saw with my own eyes before it vanished.
