The statement

I have set out to paint a scene of fellowship and shared happiness among people of the frontier — a departure, perhaps, from the hard rides and solitary watches that have filled so many of my canvases, yet one that still answers my lifelong resolve to record the world of the Old West before it vanishes entirely. As I recalled even as a young man out there, I sensed that "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples" I saw "were about to vanish, and I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good." That same duty now extends to moments of warmth and community, not only to conflict and endurance.

Every figure wears the authentic dress I have always insisted upon — the correct hats, boots, and working clothes drawn from firsthand observation, the documentary accuracy I learned as a field illustrator for *Harper's Weekly*. If modern dress threatened to intrude, I have corrected it to denim and period cloth, preserving the integrity of the scene. The composition gathers the group in sunlight, their faces turned toward one another, the palette warmer than my recent nocturnes yet still grounded in the muted tones of the range. Love and joy, too, belong to the record of that vanishing world.
