Imagined after Frederic Remington
Settler children
After Frederic Remington, made 2026-07-12. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have spent my career recording the West I saw vanishing before my eyes — "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples" that I knew "were about to vanish." Now, turning to settler children, I mean to capture another truth of that disappearing world: the fortitude demanded of the youngest souls who grew up in it.
These children possess a resilience born of necessity. They know cold mornings, hard work, and distances that swallow adults whole. I have painted them with the same authenticity I bring to cavalry tack and Native dress — no sentimentality, no studio prettiness. The muted palette and broad handling echo the atmospheric approach of my recent nocturnes, favoring mood over anecdote, but the subject itself required something harder: the tenacity in a child's stance, the vitality that refuses to break under frontier hardship.
I want the viewer to recognize that endurance is not the sole province of soldiers and cowboys. It lives in these young figures too — in their grip on daily survival, their quiet strength against an unforgiving land. This is part of the record, and it must be set down before it, too, is gone.
