# Artist's Statement
I have spent years riding among the ranches and army posts of the West, sketching what I see before it vanishes — "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples" that I sensed, even as a young man, "were about to vanish, and I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good." This new work carries that same documentary impulse. The photograph pinned inside the lodge caught something true: the working outfit, the hard light, the frame of timber and stone that shelters men who have earned their rest. I have painted it as I saw it, with the same concern for correct tack and authentic detail that guided my field illustrations for Harper's. Yet in recent years I have moved beyond mere reportage, adopting broader, more atmospheric handling to capture mood as much as fact. Here the palette is direct and unvarnished — browns, weathered wood, the muted tones of a life lived outdoors — and the composition holds its subject in a moment of watchful stillness. I want the viewer to feel the resilience and fortitude of the ranch hand, the vitality that survives long days and hard weather, and the knowledge that this world, like the open range, will not last.
