The statement
I have spent my career recording the Old West as it truly was, because even as a young man I sensed that "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples" I saw were about to vanish, and I resolved "to record that world before it disappeared for good." This new work holds to that documentary principle. Every figure appears in proper period dress—jeans, boots, the working clothes of the frontier—because accuracy in such details matters. Having built my reputation as a field illustrator, I have always prided myself on "correct horses, tack, weapons, and cavalry and Native dress drawn from firsthand observation in the West."
The composition retains what I hope is recognizable as my manner: figures caught in motion or watchful stillness, the vitality and tenacity of men who endure a hard land. I have kept every person in the scene because each contributes to the authentic record of that moment. The viewer should feel the physical reality of the West—the resilience, the fortitude, the raw energy that defined that vanishing world I have dedicated myself to preserving.
