The statement
**Artist's Statement**
I have spent years in the West watching how a horse moves under a man when the ground is uncertain and the cold bites through wool and leather. This scene captures that raw physical truth — the animal's weight shifting, the rider's balance held by reflex and hard-won skill, the moment before the next stride commits them both. I have always believed that the world I saw out there, the wild riders and the open land, was about to vanish, and I resolved to record it before it disappeared for good. Every detail here — the tack, the horse, the way a man sits when he rides hard country — comes from what I observed firsthand, not from studio invention.
In recent years I have moved beyond illustration toward something closer to painting for its own sake, and here I have tried to let atmosphere and mood carry as much weight as action. The palette is muted, the brushwork broader than in my earlier work, because I want the viewer to feel the cold morning air and the watchful stillness more than any anecdote. This is not a story with a beginning and end. It is a record of endurance, resilience, and the tenacity required simply to be there.
