The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have spent my life trying to fix on canvas the West I have seen before it vanishes entirely. Even as a young man riding through that country, I sensed the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples were about to disappear, and I resolved to record that world before it was gone for good. This new work, drawn from a working ranch photograph, continues that mission—capturing not some romantic fantasy but the authentic detail of gear, horse, and rider as they truly exist in hard country.

My years as a field illustrator taught me that accuracy matters: the correct tack, the way a man sits his mount, the strain in the animal's muscle. But lately I have moved beyond mere reporting. I want atmosphere—the quality of light at dawn, the weight of cold air, the feeling of distance and watchful stillness. Here, I've pushed toward a broader handling and muted palette that conveys not just what the scene looked like, but what it *felt* like to be there: the resilience required, the tenacity, the raw physical vitality of horse and rider enduring together in that unforgiving landscape.
