The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have spent years recording what I knew was slipping away—the wild riders, the open land, the soldiers and Native peoples I saw in the West. Even as a young man I sensed they were about to vanish, and I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good. This new work, drawn from a ranch photograph, continues that mission, but now through the lens of atmosphere rather than anecdote.
In my earlier work I prided myself on documentary accuracy—correct horses, tack, weapons, cavalry and Native dress drawn from firsthand observation. But in recent years I have moved beyond illustration toward painting that favors mood over detail. Like my nocturnes, this piece builds on broad, atmospheric handling and a restrained palette to capture something felt rather than merely seen.
The composition throws the figures forward against a low horizon, all drama concentrated in their silhouettes. I want the viewer to feel the bite of morning air, the watchful stillness, the raw physical energy of horse and rider locked in that eternal dance between man and land before the barbed wire fenced it all away.
