Imagined after Frederic Remington
Two runners at dawn in Central Montana
After Frederic Remington, made 2026-08-06. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have spent my life documenting the riders and the open land of the West because I sensed, even as a young man out there, that "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples" I saw "were about to vanish," and I resolved "to record that world before it disappeared for good." This new picture of two runners at dawn in Central Montana holds to that same mission—catching a moment of raw physical effort before the country changes forever.
I have drawn these figures from direct observation, as I always have. My years illustrating for Harper's taught me that "correct horses, tack, weapons, and cavalry and Native dress drawn from firsthand observation in the West" are the foundation of honest work. Here the runners move through the chill half-light with that same authenticity—lean bodies, the strain of long distance, the bite of cold Montana air.
In my last years I have moved toward atmosphere over anecdote, painting nocturnes with "broad, atmospheric handling" that favor "mood over anecdote." The high-keyed dawn palette and the open horizontal silence of the land carry the vitality and endurance of these figures more powerfully than any theatrical dash or gunshot could.
