The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have spent years riding with cowboys and cavalrymen, watching horses and men pushed to their limits under an indifferent sky. Even as a young man in the West, I sensed that the wild riders, the open land, and the hard lives I witnessed were about to vanish, and I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good. This new work returns to that fundamental charge: to capture the raw vitality and resilience of ranch life as it truly is, not as parlor decoration.
The composition throws horse and rider forward with all the muscular force I can muster—bodies strained, weather biting, the land itself a test of endurance. I have built my reputation on documentary accuracy—correct tack, authentic dress, the weight and balance of real horsemanship drawn from firsthand observation—and I refuse to prettify what I have seen. Every detail must carry the fortitude and tenacity of figures who meet hardship without flinching.
In my final years I have pushed beyond illustration toward atmosphere and mood, yet this piece reclaims the kinetic energy that remains my signature: the power of life at full extension.
