The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have spent the better part of my working life setting down what I saw out West before it vanishes entirely. Even as a young man riding through that country, I sensed that the wild riders, the open land, the soldiers and Native peoples were about to disappear, and I resolved to record that world before it was gone for good. This new work returns me to the ranch — not the theatrical gallop or the gunfight, but the plain, hard morning when a man simply mounts his horse and goes to work.
I have built my reputation on accuracy: correct tack, correct horses, the gear and dress drawn from what I have seen firsthand. But in recent years I have pushed beyond the reporter's duty toward something closer to painting proper — broader handling, higher color, atmosphere over anecdote. Here the composition throws horse and rider forward in a single compact mass, the low horizon and pale sky pressing down that chill dawn light. The muted palette and direct brushwork aim to give you the bite of the air, the resilience and tenacity of the figure, the raw physical fact of another cold morning on the range.
