Happy settler children, after Frederic Remington

The statement

I have spent my working life recording the vanishing West — the hard riders, the soldiers, the long watches under big skies — because even when I was young out there I knew it was all disappearing. I resolved to set it down before it was gone for good. I built my reputation on getting the details right: correct horses, correct tack, the weapons and dress drawn from what I actually saw in the field. But in recent years I have pushed beyond that reporter's duty toward something closer to fine art — higher color, broader handling, pictures that live on atmosphere and feeling rather than anecdote alone.

This new work departs from my usual subjects. These are settler children, and they are happy. The land that has demanded so much fortitude and endurance from the men and women I have painted — that has called for tenacity, resilience, raw physical vigor just to survive — here offers a moment of ease. The palette is warm, the light gentle, the composition open rather than tense. I want the viewer to see that the struggle I have documented was not without purpose, that the West being fenced and tamed might yet hold something worth the cost.
