The statement

I have come out to Montana again, but this time not to the open range I once knew. The Old West I set out to record before it vanished has indeed disappeared, and in its place I find these runners threading the night outside the mine tower at Butte — a different breed of Western man, shaped by different labor, but still caught in the grip of hard country and harder work.

I resolved long ago to paint what I saw with a field reporter's accuracy, and so I have studied these figures as closely as I once studied cavalry tack and horse gear. Yet in my final years I have learned that atmosphere and mood can carry truth as powerfully as any documentary detail. Here I have painted the scene as a nocturne, using the broad tonal handling and near-monochrome palette I explored in works like *The Scout: Friends or Foes?* The mine tower rises as a stark silhouette against the night sky, and the runners move through shadow with the same watchful resilience, the same raw physical vitality I once found in men on horseback. The West has changed its dress, but endurance and fortitude remain, and I mean to set them down before this world, too, is gone.
