The statement
I have spent my career racing against time to record the Old West before it vanishes entirely. Even as a young man out West, I sensed that the wild riders, the open land, the soldiers and Native peoples I saw were about to disappear, and I resolved to capture that world before it was gone for good. This new work returns to that founding purpose—a ranch scene drawn from direct observation, rendered with the accuracy I learned as a field illustrator, getting the horses, the tack, the dress right from firsthand knowledge.
But I am no longer content merely to illustrate. In recent years I have pushed toward something closer to fine art—higher-keyed color, broader handling, pictures built on atmosphere and mood rather than anecdote alone. Here I want the viewer to feel the vitality and vigor of working life on the range, the tenacity and fortitude required to meet a hard land on its own terms. The composition must convey endurance—the resilience of figures who rise before dawn, who hold a watch, who refuse to quit. This is authentic Western life, caught before the barbed wire closes it down for good.
