The statement
# Artist's Statement
I've spent years chasing the West before it vanishes entirely — the open range, the working rider, the toughness required to survive out here. When I came across that ranch photograph, I recognized in it the same quality I've tried to capture in everything from *A Dash for the Timber* to *A Cold Morning on the Range*: the bond between horse and man, the physical vitality that defines this life before barbed wire and railroads erase it for good.
This new work carries forward my commitment to documentary accuracy — correct tack, authentic posture, the gear drawn from firsthand observation — but I've moved beyond mere illustration. Like my recent nocturnes, I've let atmosphere and mood carry as much weight as anecdote. The palette is restrained, the brushwork broader and more direct, allowing the resilience and fortitude of the figure to emerge not through theatrical action but through presence itself: a man and his horse, watchful, enduring, genuine.
I want the viewer to feel the tenacity required to hold this ground, the vigor beneath the stillness, and the knowledge that this world — already slipping away — will soon exist only in memory and paint.
