The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have always insisted that what I record must be true to what I saw out West — "correct horses, tack, weapons, and cavalry and Native dress drawn from firsthand observation." The moment I sensed that the wild riders, the open land, the soldiers and Native peoples were about to vanish, I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good. Every detail matters because I am not inventing a romance; I am preserving what was actually there.
In this new work, I have taken care to dress every figure in proper period clothing — blue jeans, boots, the gear a working man would wear on the range. Anyone who appeared in modern dress has been corrected, put into denim and leather that belongs to the time. The integrity of the scene depends on this authenticity. I want the viewer to see these people as they were, not as costume but as life, caught in the raw physical energy and tenacity that defined them. The "Remington look" is not a style — it is fidelity to a vanishing world, rendered with the vitality and fortitude those men and women lived.
