The statement
I have spent the better part of my life out West among the riders, the soldiers, and the Native peoples, and I set out to record that world because even then I knew it was slipping away. The open range, the wild horse, the man who lived by his nerve and his rifle—all of it was disappearing, and I resolved to get it down before it vanished for good.
For years I built my reputation on accuracy. I drew what I saw: correct tack, correct weapons, the exact cut of a cavalry jacket, the true conformation of a working horse. I wanted the authority of a field reporter, the hard factual weight that would make a picture credible. But in recent years I have pushed beyond illustration. I want atmosphere now, mood, the feeling of a cold morning or a silent watch under a blue twilight. I have turned to a higher-keyed, more impressionistic palette, and in my nocturnes I let broad handling and withheld narrative do the work that anecdote once did.
This scene carries that intent forward—vitality and endurance caught in a single moment, the raw physical truth of a world I witnessed before it closed.
