The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have spent these years in the West because I knew, even as a young man, that the wild riders, the open land, the soldiers and Native peoples I saw were about to vanish, and I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good. This new work returns to that original charge—to set down what I witnessed with my own eyes, the authentic gear and dress and hard physical facts of ranch life, before the barbed wire and the plow finish what they have begun.

I have moved beyond mere illustration now, seeking atmosphere and mood as much as documentary detail. Here the composition throws horse and rider forward against the emptiness of the range, all the drama concentrated in movement and silhouette. I want the viewer to feel the raw vitality of that life—the strain of muscle, the bite of weather, the tenacity required simply to hold on. Broad, direct brushwork conveys what anecdote cannot: the resilience and fortitude of figures who meet a harsh land without flinching, and the knowledge that this world, for all its vigor, is already slipping away.
