A dawn scene in central Montana, after Frederic Remington

The statement

I have spent the better part of my working life recording a world I knew was slipping away—the wild riders, the open land, the soldiers and Native peoples I saw with my own eyes in the West, all about to vanish for good. This new dawn scene in central Montana carries forward that urgency, but in the language I have arrived at only in these last years. Where once I might have filled the frame with a plunging horse and rider caught at the full extension of the gallop, every detail of tack and dress precisely rendered from firsthand observation, now I let the broad sweep of atmosphere do the work. The palette is muted—cold grays, duns, the pale chill of first light—and the brushwork direct, building mood over anecdote. The horizontal sweep of the land and the low, luminous sky press down on the solitary figure, and the whole picture rests on stillness and distance rather than theatrical charge. I want the viewer to feel the bite of that morning air, the watchful silence, the toughness required simply to be there at all, holding on in a hard country.
