Imagined after Frederic Remington
A cowboy slinging
After Frederic Remington, made 2026-07-13. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a picture of a cowboy slinging his rope, and once more I find myself recording a moment I sense is already slipping away. Even when I was a young man out West, I understood that "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples" I saw were "about to vanish," and I resolved then "to record that world before it disappeared for good." This rope throw — the twist of the torso, the coil snapping free — is one more fragment of that vanishing life.
I have built my work on what I saw firsthand: correct horses, tack, and the working gear drawn from actual observation in the frontier. The lariat itself, the way it is held and thrown, must be right or the picture is a lie. Yet in recent years I have pushed beyond mere illustration toward something more atmospheric. Here I want you to feel the physical exertion, the sudden release of energy as the loop flies, but also the space and light around the figure — the mood of a long day on the range, the strain and vitality compressed into one gesture before it all fades into memory.
